Circus Protest, Earth Day, and Vegan Breakfast 4-21-07

1. Shrine Circus Protest!
2. Earth Day @ Dandelion
3. Vegan Breakfast Monday
4. Action: Vote for More Veg Food…

1. The Shrine Circus is Here!

What? Demonstration against the Circus
When? Saturday, April 21st & Sunday, April 22nd
9:00am, 1:30pm, and 6:00pm (show times both days)
Where? UCF Arena (Look for ARFF outside the
construction area along Gemini Blvd)

Again this year, Orlando’s Bahia Shriners are sponsoring the Royal Hanneford Circus as their “Shrine Circus.” The Royal Hanneford Circus has a long and sordid record of poor animal care and dangerous animal rampages. For a record of their violations through 2005, visit: www.circuses.com/pdfs/fact-royal.pdf. And for general information about the violations of the Shrine Circus, check out: www.circuses.com/feat/shrine/index.asp

BARC will be joining the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) to protest the circus this weekend, since this is a campus issue we are strongly against. ARFF needs your help leafleting circusgoers before and after each performance. Signs and literature will be provided.

Note: the times listed above are when you should show up, not the actual circus show times.

If you can’t make it out to protest, you can still help:

Please send an e-mail to the Potentate of the Bahia Shriners, Sid Massey, at smassey166@aol.com (send a copy to: Potentate@bahiashrine.org), and urge him to switch to animal-free circuses or alternative fundraisers that do not harm animals.

2. Celebrate Earth Day with us at Dandelion!

What? Central Florida Earth Day
When? Sunday, April 22, 2007
11am - 4:00pm
Where? Dandelion Communitea Cafe
618 N Thornton Ave
Orlando Fl 32803
407-362-1864

Earth Day is celebrated every year to inspire awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s environment. Bring your family to learn more about local non-profit groups. There will be live music and entertainment. All funds raised will be used for local environmental outreach and education. Donations are tax-deductible. BARC will have a table set up the whole day, so come on out and show your support!

Sponsors include Vegetarians of Central Florida, Simply Well, Dandelion Communitea Café, OUC, and more. Speakers include Emily Ruff of Florida School of Herbal Studies, Rebecca Reis of Slow Food Orlando, and Heather Carpenter of the Humane Society of the United States. 3. LAST Vegan Breakfast at the Honors College!

What? Vegan Breakfast!
When? Monday, April 26th (8am - about 10am)
Where? Lobby of the Burnett Honors College

BARC has teamed up with the Honors College at UCF to cook vegan breakfasts periodically throughout this semester. As usual, we will have pancakes, bananas, orange juice, samples of soy sausage, muffins, bagels w/ tofutti cream cheese, etc… and all of it will be vegan and free! Bring yourself and your non-veggie friends to show them how yummy eating cruelty-free actually is! We will only be there for a couple of hours, so be sure to get there early (serving starts around 8am) to get your fair share of the food.

See you all for the last vegan breakfast of the semester!! :-D

4. Tell the Marketplace What’s on All of Our Minds…

These surveys are done every so often, and they need to hear from BARC members that we want MORE veg food in the Marketplace! There are plenty of opportunities during this survey to mention that you are veg and that you are unhappy with their vegan and vegetarian options, so please let them know. :)

“We would like to hear your opinion on the UCF Dining Services meal plans. Your input will be used as part of our continuous improvement process and is very important to us. The survey can be completed in less than ten minutes. As a thank you, all responses will be entered into a drawing to win your choice of a 2GB iPod Nano or a $200 iTunes card.”
