1. Meatout Recap

Thanks to everyone who put in extraordinary effort this week. We turned a lot of people towards a more compassionate diet. The cooking demo went really well, and people enjoyed the food at our vegan food sampling on Wednesday.

We are sorry about the issues that anyone experience with the vegan options available at The Marketplace. We were let down, and we are working hard to make sure that things get better for eating vegan food on campus. Thanks a lot to those of you who took the time to speak to the management at The Marketplace about the lack of choices.

Act Now to Help Pigs in Florida

March 21st, 2006

Constitutional Amendment Banning Cruel Gestation Crates in Danger!

In 2002, Floridians and animal activists from around the country worked tirelessly to pass a citizen initiative to ban one of factory farming’s worst forms of intense confinement: the gestation crate. Over 2 1/2 million Floridians voted to make it illegal to keep pregnant pigs in barren cages so small they can not turn around or move more than a step forwards or backwards. The vote was the first time in United States’ history that an established method of factory farming had been banned for its inherent cruelty to animals.

Floridians have spoken clearly to protect animals by voting to ban this cruel practice. Despite this, the Florida state legislature is considering a bill that would remove the provision banning gestation crates from the State Constitution.

You Can Help

Please contact your Florida State Representative and State Senator and ask that they oppose efforts to remove the gestation crate ban from Florida’s Constitution. Ask them NOT to support Senate Joint Resolution #1918 and House Joint Resolution #06-05.

BARC Update 2/26/06

February 27th, 2006

See the email in its original format here

1. Next Meeting: Tomorrow, Monday, February 27

What? BARC Meeting
When? Monday, Feb 27
@ 6:30 pm
Where? BARC cubicle in the Student Union on campus (SU Room 208)

Who would have guessed that we have a meeting tomorrow (or today, depending on when you get this)? :) At this meeting we have lots to discuss about the rapidly approaching Meat Out events from March 20th - 24th (see info below). In fact, there is SO much to talk about and plan that we are having another meeting next week to finalize plans before everyone leaves for Spring Break. So the next two meetings are crucial if we hope to have a successful week for the animals!

2. Project Darfur: Because We’re Concerned About Human Animals Too!

What? Darfur Awareness Week
When? February 27th - March 3rd (schedule of events listed on Project: Darfur website)
Where? Memory Mall (grass area between Classroom 1 and HPA buildings)

Several members of BARC have been on the planning committee of Project Darfur — a week long event full of speakers, live music, and information geared toward raising awareness about the genocide occurring in an area of Sudan in Africa called Darfur. Many tents will be set up on the Memory Mall on campus 24-hours-a-day to represent a mock refugee camp. This is where all the events of the week will take place. Please visit the official website to find out all about it: www.projectdarfur.com

*** Wednesday evening, BARC is helping Campus Peace Action prepare a huge banquet. The food will be all vegetarian and we are counting on feeding hundreds of people. So we need help! If you would like to help cook or donate cooking supplies (like giant pots or pans), we have bulk recipes that need to be made beforehand. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote vegan eating on campus. Email Sara@barcdontbite.org if you can help out in any way.

3. Meat Out / Earth Week: March 20 - 24!!

What? Meat Out and Earth Week
When? March 20 - 24 (the week directly after Spring Break)

BARC is joining forces with groups like Free the Planet and Environmental Society to organize a week-long extravaganza in support of vegetarian living and environmental sustainability and conservation. Since National Meat Out Day and Earth Week are around the same time, we are working together and pooling our resources to make it the biggest week possible! This is what we are discussing at the next two BARC meetings, so we need everyone’s help organizing. :)

BARC’s events for the week include: a free vegan food givaway, bringing a vegan chef on campus to give a talk and book signing, as well as many events during the day outside the Student Union (including an animal rights video screening). The Marketplace on campus will also expand their vegan/vegetarian options for the week, so we encourage everyone to eat there many times in support! Also, this week there will be several environmental speakers and recycling events presented by the other groups involved.

4. "Dinner and a Movie" was a Success! Thanks For Your Help!

Our "Pasta and Princess Bride" event went really well. Thank you to everyone who got to the Lake Claire Community Center early to help cook and set up. It was a huge help! The pasta, vegan meat balls, vegan chicken parmesan, eggplant, and garlic bread were a huge success. BARC got many compliments on the food, and a lot of information about vegan eating and factory farming went out to UCF students who otherwise never would have been exposed to it.

So start thinking about ideas for the next Dinner and a Movie event in a month. We need funny movies that would draw a crowd, and also a food idea that goes with it. Any ideas? Email Sara@barcdontbite.org
